Завой/Turning

Two pigeons courting on a streetlamp’s armature –
they’re briefly silhouetted on the patched façade
of an apartment block. Nothing comes of it.
One’s left to mark time on the sun-warmed metal.

Friday evening and things undone will have to wait.
My diary is the lazy dog stretched out on the pavement.
Displays of stacked vegetables attend their moment.
If we have grown old, it is only as gourds grow old –

we are all texture. In these early hints of twilight,
trams shriek like the wind in a translated poem
and overheard language unravels like birdsong.
                                       Proximities and likenesses proliferate.

The blurred hour concedes. Skies thicken.
The last sun of the day, our late supper.

Запад Изток/West East

The east wind’s last blast we’re told or hope
before spring colours landscapes, clears skies.
Sparse traffic slides to a halt, although roads
still link these cities muffled with snow.
Deer tread delicately across white fields
and a fox in the corner of a wood
trots after its prey. The Danube,
                                                         close to breaking point, slouches
towards the Black Sea to be reborn …

From a restaurant window further south
I’m looking out on a well carved
into the landscape, the staggered roofs
that attest to endurance, a hint
of change in cloud patterns –
another visit to an ancient city
where, just as I’m leaving, sunlight
                                                         spills across the paving slabs.

Цветя от балкона (леко връщане)/Flowers from the balcony (slight return)

                                                 Sipping gins on Vitoshka, posing
                                                 questions concerning language acquisition,
archaeologies of sound, we are a right pair.
One day of high summer, mid-March,
                                                 and we’re people-watching philosophers
                                                 sun-bathing on St Patrick’s Day …

                                                                         *

                                                What scrapes kept us awake
and creaking wires along the street
                                                were not his ‘ghostly absences’
whose presences might be yearned for,
                                                those passionate idealists,
now the news we’re reading is largely fake.

                                                                        *

Shapes of fallen plaster across the way
might be framed with some art –
but situations change before our very eyes.
                                                Neighbours emerge onto their balconies,
arranging pots of first spring flowers
in the warm slow Balkan rain.

Такава простота/Such simplicity

                                                      Under ash trees’ stripped branches,
                                                      intertwinings filtering light,
like the idea forming on the tip
                                                      of someone else’s tongue,
                                                      an inconspicuous flash of white
                                                      are snow drops emerging
                                                      from their closed season.

                                                      She’s been practising all winter,
                                                      windows shut: études, nocturnes,
                                                      resolutions, their plangency …
                                                      Today she’s stopped sweeping snow.
                                                      Balconies attend our changes
                                                      in behaviour. Hearing difference,
                                                      we’re searching out spring bulbs.

Сред клековете/Among mountain pines

                                                             The sky is not behaving.
                                                             It’s not keeping its promises.
                                                             The forecasters are puzzled
                                                             but it’s done this before.
The crucial thing is to recognise
                                                             when it’s being serious
and when it’s playing a game.

For example here’s a handful of clouds
                                                             which usually take delight
in their own reflections but somehow
have got lost in the mountains.
They sail from peak to peak
                                                             and look for lakes, windows,
                                                             skiers with mirrors for eyes.

                                                             Under these vain water-bearers,
                                                             we have our cares,
                                                             these old jackets and boots
                                                             which no longer fit us
and vocabularies from which words fall
like the snow which is starting to hide
the way back to the hut. For us,
                                                             the choice remains clear
and as if according to schedule
an old man appears in the forest
                                                             and advises us to follow
his directions and not to get confused
beneath the clouds among the клекове.
