Да започнете оттук/To start from here

If it happens, it will be in a place much like this.
Nothing tangible at first, nothing sure
that springs complete from churning ocean.
Just an accumulation, like a landscape
acquiring detail. That pylon, for instance,
                                             whose presence is unavoidable,
                                             but takes some noticing nonetheless.

That will be how it is. It will not be
as we imagine it was: the vision,
                                             the breathtaking start, the moment
of completion when breath sighs again …

Never before have so many resources
dried up around us. There will be
                                             no inspiration, no breakthroughs.
Just an accumulation, like a landscape
acquiring detail. These trees, for instance,
are not auditioning for a film.
They are simply there and it’s from that,
if it happens, that it will begin.

Гледка от влак/View from a train

In passing, of course, these details:
                                                     roof shapes, patterns of tiles,
                                                     a geometry softened by snow
whose last fists hang onto branches
                                                     like the buds of flowers
                                                     while, on sheening, untarmacked lanes,
the ice compacts in grey layers.

Where life goes on, it’s a man
                                                     shovelling clinker from a stove
                                                     or these steamy professions
of plans inside a cold carriage –
                                                     or maybe professions of love
we’ve heard but not yet recognised –
as the train creaks, shrieks and starts to move.

Модернистично време/Modernist weather

                                                      Like the bears that woke
                                                      too soon from hibernation,
                                                      we’re confused, unused
                                                      to temperature swerves
                                                      through cloud days, sun days
                                                      requiring further adjustments
along the grain of our habits.

                                                     Seasonal reprieves and promise –
                                                     yes, promise, even now
                                                     that pavements are slipping
                                                     beneath a hardening tin sheen
                                                     and unpredictable melt patches.

Finches flicker at a feeding tube
and up in the woods we can only imagine
                                                     how fronds unfurl and bloom
against the grain of the weather –
this midwinter spring, this smoky light
                                                     that rises up the frontages.

From a quiet corner, the street
extends into a parallel arcade of trees.

Тридневната стопилка/The Three-Day Melt

                                                           After waiting the week
for a damaged gutter’s steady drip,
it starts to beat an old tattoo.
And we are amongst the few,
                                                           digging out our neighbourly slush,
metal offered to the melting ridge,
                                                           and thinking ourselves heroic.

                                                           Glossed by sun-tormented snow,
                                                           the street achieves a sheen,
                                                           like a hotel foyer magazine,
                                                           before it hardens, greys,
                                                           maculate as newsprint.
Here are the furrows we made,
                                                           footfalls disappearing.

                                                           Already we are forgetting
                                                           the claustrophobic days,
                                                           beating around the bush
                                                           to clear negotiable ways
                                                           back to the ordinary rush.

                                                           Out of suspension now,
                                                           the accelerating hours
                                                           push on; clouds clear;
and we can no longer mark time –
                                                           grateful, at least, for not
                                                           having to watch every step.

Топла гора/Warm forest

Seasonal paradoxes are paw marks in snow,
impressions of an absence that’s not so old,
like the silence from which words form
and back into which poems threaten to go.

Snow’s proximities open onto new spaces –
easy to underestimate scale and distances
along these cusps of mountain and cloud –
and yet they take us out of the wood.

Or maybe deeper in … Geometry
is an attempt to fix an arrangement
                                               of leaf-mould, frond-tips, bark-crust
that hardly make themselves felt for long.

                                               Winter denies logic, refuses measurement.
Through a warm forest, we walk in the sun.

Кратък разговор в кухнята/Brief conversation in the kitchen

It’s as if I’ve been here before,
sitting on this chair beneath
your painting of red peppers.

It’s as if I’m meeting again
people I knew in some other life –
as if you could ask me to pass
a particular plate or fork
and, without so much as a thought,
I’d reach for the drawer
where it’s always been kept.

It’s one way to explain
this atmosphere, this ease –
and, of course, we’ve spoken
via email, and I’ve seen on Skype
your painting in this kitchen
where friends, not guests, are entertained.

It’s only as you make to leave,
to cycle across the city,
it’s as if I’m doing a disservice.
There was no other life,
nothing pre-ordained.

It’s as if I’ve forgotten the word
in my own language – although,
as we’re saying our goodbyes,
I’m not so sure it ever had one.
