And so let me tell you
what I’ve seen
through sliding doors –
things, as he said,
on which so much depends
and the faces
of fellow travellers.
Big news kicks up
its clangour
like the trains
which pass on loops
without becoming more
than a sonorous rumour
in a distant tunnel.
So much more
to be said
of the fine detail:
new purchases,
arched pencilled eyebrows,
the heirlooms gathered in a bag
and carried who knows where.
